What do I need to roast or grill steak in foil packets?

For those nights when you need a quick and easy dinner recipe, oven foil packs are a perfect choice. Not only are they super simple to make, but it's easy to get so much flavor in a foil packet meal.

All you need to make these foil packets on the grill or in the oven is some aluminum foil, a knife, and a boiling pot or microwave to parboil (partially cook) the potatoes. And, of course, you'll need your grill or oven!

Ingredients

  • Steak
  • Potatoes
  • Red pepper
  • Onion
  • Olive oil
  • Garlic
  • Paprika
  • Thyme
  • Salt and pepper
  • Lemon juice

Our pepper and onion steak foil packets are a prime example of what you can make with a foil pack dinner! It's essentially a steak and potatoes recipe but cooked together in foil with peppers, onions, olive oil, and seasoning.

You can add whatever you would like to these easy foil packets. One of my favorite ingredients to add is shrimp. Surf and turf foil packets in the oven make some of the best family dinner ideas!

Foil dinners and easy grilled steak recipes like this one are even more delicious when you add garlic butter sauce or Creamy Lemon Butter Sauce to the mix. A few simple ingredients, and boom! You have an easy-peasy meal with amazing flavor.

What kind of steak is best to cook in a foil pack?

Since this foil pack dinner cooks relatively quickly and has only a few other ingredients, you are best off choosing a high quality steak with a good natural flavor.

The best options are top sirloin steak or ribeye steak, as both have good marbling and flavor. Our Picanha Steak and Reverse Sear Ribeye are the best examples of how flavorful sirloin and ribeye are!

How to Cook Steak and Potatoes on the Grill

  1. Cut steak into roughly 2-inch pieces. Dice potatoes, peppers, and onions into 1-inch pieces or smaller.

Partially cook the potatoes by boiling them for 5 minutes on the stove or cooking for 2 minutes in a dish with some water in the microwave.

Mix together oil, garlic, paprika, thyme, salt, pepper, and lemon juice. Toss the steak, potatoes, onions, and peppers in the oil mixture.

How to Cook Steak in the Oven with Foil

  1. Follow the directions above until you reach the part where you cook the steak foil packets. Place the foil pack steak and potatoes in the oven at 425°F for around 20 minutes.
  2. When done cooking, open the pack and place it under the broiler for a couple of minutes to brown. Serve in the pack or on a plate.
